Tanks for Teachers is a program to put freshwater aquariums in schools in the Baton Rouge area.  The program is free to schools that are interested, but is limited to both funding and volunteer availability.

Each awarded school will have a member of SELAS assist the teacher responsible for the aquarium (or whoever is in charge of the aquarium, from now on referred to as teacher) with the initial set-up of the aquarium, the initial stocking of the aquarium and will demonstrate how to do water changes.

The teacher in charge of the aquarium will be responsible for maintaining the aquarium during the school year (water changes, feeding the fish etc). When the school year ends, the teacher will also have to coordinate with either their assistant from SELAS to bring the fish back to Louisiana Fish Store (LFS) or bring the fish back to them self. The teacher will also be responsible for taking the aquarium down over the summer (or keep it maintained).

SELAS will provide the following:

• Aquarium (if not already provided)
• Additional Sponge Filter
• Air Pump
• Gravel
• Decorations
• Dechlorinator
• Fish Food
• Python Water Changer
• Bucket
• Fish

Requirements of the teacher:

• Motivated person that is interested in keeping fish (experience is helpful, but not necessary)
• Access to a water source such as a faucet or hose
• A flat surface able to support an aquarium (up to 400 lbs)
• Ability to lift a bucket of water (20 lbs)
