I have been looking for golden tench for at least 5 years now. I could never find anyone breeding them in the US, and never saw them available on import lists. If you do find some, please let me know ... _________________ Formerly andregurov, presently insane |

| also another interesting addition to a water garden would be a diamond sturgeon and a star sterlet, a small sturgeon. the star sterlet would be the better of the two as it is peaceful. the diamond sturgeon has been known to eat smaller fish. both grow to about 4 feet in a pond. |

| found some tench. found a page called koi pond guide. it was created by a lady called lisa. on this page she mentions other koi pond fish including the golden tench and rudds. so i contacted her and asked where someone can get golden tenches and rudd, she said she knew of a wholeseller called blue ridge hatcheries and contacted them. they didnt have any rudd but expected to have golden tench in april and may. the problem is this is a fish wholeseller but possibly we can convince a local fish supplier to order some. tench really seem to be a facisnating fish and it is a hard fish to find, |

this is what i have learned so far on the elusive golden tench. it is a european fish and is a color mutation of the popular european game fish the tench. the wild tench is an attractive grayish green. in addition to the wild and golden varieties there is a red and a gold and white forms. it is a member of the carp family. it is a bottom dweller and seems to relish the muck of the bottom of a pond. it requires little oxygen and prefers stagnant water. it is rarely seen swiming in a pond, due to this love of the muddy muck of the bottom of a pond, but it will come to the surface and eat pellets. it is a mainstay in european ornamental ponds but rare in the united states. in fact some states may have a ban on them as there are non native populations in the north, texas and the north west. it seems that people tried to introduce them as a game fish in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. it has a rather c shaped body and grows to nearly two feet in length. it can withstand temps between 32 to 88 degrees. this is what i have learned so far on the tench in hopes that i or someone can acquire some of the rather unique and rare pond fish.

| wonder if there is a ban on tench in louisiana or mississippi? seeing how it is a lover of mud and muck i bet it would have a ball in a louisiana swamp or a slow moving mississippi slough. |

No ban on tench, but I believe rudd (a related species) is illegal to possess in Louisiana. If Blue Ridge carries tench - and that is a big if, as I ordered from them for several years and they never had any - I'm fairly certain I can convince someone in New Orleans to order some.
I'd prefer the natural form, but I'll happily settle for golden. _________________ Formerly andregurov, presently insane |

| i am not a 100 percent convinced because i didnt seem them listed on blue ridge's page. but this lisa lane lady says they will have them in april and may, and the two pages seemed connected. its quiet possible that they may have some and just dont list them as they are not as possible as other ornamental fish such as koi and goldfish, because they hang out and seem to almost bury themselves in the mud and are not as visible as koi and goldfish because of the fact that they rarely come to the surface. all i can say is contact blue ridge and lisa i have listed the two pages. i may not be totally convinced but i tend to lean lisa's way because she said there was no rudd but they did have golden tench. i wouldnt think she would say one species and not the other. she sent me links to shipping info but the blue ridge site doesnt mention them. the possibility is they arent popular and only list them for those two months or dont list them at all. i also would rather have the the wild form over the golden because the golden looks like a c shaped goldfish. i find the greenish gray a more appealing color. contact lisa on koi pond guide see what see she says. |

| i am curious to see if she says the same. i also wonder if the gold color breeds true. it maybe a recessive gene that only a few carry and this may be why we dont see them that much. i find most aquarist tend to lead towards the the wild form of species. where as people who just want a gold fish pond or an aquarium will go for color mutations and fin varieties or even dyed and tattooed fish. an aquarist will pay more for a wild form than a mutation. most of us tend to hate blood parrots and man made forms of fish. |
