I've never kept angels before three weeks ago. Tonight I get a surprise:

I can set aside some tank capacity to raise some of these to a decent size, and I'd like to do so for the experience.

But I probably won't be able to keep more than a couple into adulthood. I will need to find homes for the rest. And I don't want to raise more than I can effectively rehome.

So, what is the demand for these? Any members that might be interested? Local fish stores? Internet sales and shipping? Other options?

Eggs to sell-able size is a long process....don't count your chickens before they hatch.

1st, if there are other fish in that tank, there is a good chance the eggs will get eaten. I would move the eggs to a different tank. Look on the internet for ways of raising the fry. You will need baby brine shrimp though.

The only other fish is another angel pair, and the parents have them in a corner. I'm about to set up a 20g and move the other pair into that, just to give everyone some peace.

The method I choose to raise the fry will depend on how many I'm likely to readily find homes for. I'm not aiming to become a pro breeder or make a net income off the hobby, though a little money to offset expenses is always a nice bonus. If it also helps support a locally-owned fish store, that's a bonus too.

If I think I can effectively rehome a lot of them, I may go all out with brine shrimp etc., and try to maximize survival rate.

Otherwise, no sense in going through the extra trouble. Would rather let many perish immediately, than have to euthanize many later.

I've raised surprise egglayer fry once before, and I bumbled through it with egg yolk and finely crumbled flake. Still got 50 healthy red Glofish out of it, which was more than I expected.

I must have been more tired than I thought when I posted this. Smile

If a mod wants to move this to a more appropriate forum than livebearers, that would be great!

EDIT: Thank you so much!

Pretty cool!

Like Clay said, try not to count your chickens. It takes a lot of work and some trial and error. It is however a wonderful challenge to take on.

Have fun!

Forget brine shrimp, go to kensfish.com and order golden pearls (under specialty food) in various sizes. It simulates brine shrimp by staying in the water column, but is nutritional unlike brine shrimp which has very little value unless gut loaded.

The Golden Pearls sound interesting, will check it out. I do also have the finest Angels Plus fry starter formula, which I've been using for guppy fry with success.

Looks like the advice to not count your chickens until they hatch was very wise indeed! None of the eggs appear to have been fertilized. They've turned white one by one after a day, and were removed by the male.

I read he's supposed to actually touch each egg with his papilla, and he didn't; he just came close. Stef thinks it might have been the straight vertical orientation of the slate that confused him. Angels willing, we'll give it another try in a month.

Cris
Sorry you lost the eggs.
Years ago We had our breeders in bare tanks with a piece of slate leaning against the side to which the female would lay a row of eggs then the male would come behind her and fertilize the row He actually does not touch the eggs but comes very close, then she would lay another row and the process would repeat itself till she finishes. After, we would take the slate with the eggs out put them in a tank with an airstone at the base to keep movement over the eggs to prevent fungus. We also put methelene blue in it to help discurage fungus.
Fed infersoria first then progressed to newly hatched brine shrimp,
Just the way we did it.
John

Hey John! May have to try that method next time. Hopefully next time we'll also catch the egg laying in progress, this time it was already done by the time we spotted it.

Cool! I've had a few angel spawnings but the eggs were always gone within 24 hours. Good luck.
